Net salary calculator for Europe: from gross to net pay
Your gross salary is the amount in your employment contract. Your net salary is what reaches your bank account after income tax and employee social security contributions. A net salary calculator for Europe helps you compare job offers, plan a move abroad or check a payslip before you sign.
Why take-home pay differs between countries
Each country combines tax brackets, tax credits and contributions in its own way. Germany and France deduct sizeable social contributions on top of progressive income tax. The Netherlands builds employee premiums into its first tax bracket and then reduces the bill with tax credits. Poland applies a 12% first bracket but adds a separate 9% health contribution. This is why the same gross salary can leave very different net amounts.
Tips for comparing gross and net salary
Compare countries with the same gross amount and look at the effective deduction rate, not only the headline tax rate. Some countries, such as Spain and Italy, often pay salary in 12 to 14 instalments, so the monthly figure in a contract may differ from the annual amount divided by 12. Family status, region and employer benefits can also change the result.
