Euro vs national currencies in Europe

Europe is not one currency zone. Here is what to know when you travel, work or send money across borders.

The euro and the EU

Most, but not all, EU countries use the euro. Czechia, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden still use their own currencies. Outside the EU, countries such as Switzerland, Norway and the United Kingdom also have their own currencies.

Check the real exchange rate

The European Central Bank publishes daily euro reference rates, which are a neutral benchmark. Use our currency converter to see the reference rate, then compare it with what your bank or card provider offers.

Avoid hidden margins

Banks, airports and exchange offices often add a margin to the market rate and sometimes a fee. When a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, choosing the local currency is usually cheaper.

Sending money abroad

Within the euro area, euro transfers are generally simple and cheap. For other currencies, compare the final amount received across banks and transfer services, not only the advertised fee.

Planning a budget in another currency

If you earn in one currency and spend in another, exchange rates can change your real income. Keep a small buffer and avoid exchanging all your money at once.
